Objectives and functioning

Find out all about our objectives and how the Selune scientific program works.

The scientific programme on the Selune began in 2012 and will continue until 2027. Researchers are monitoring the ecological restoration of the river, in order to characterise the physical, chemical and biological processes involved and to support the societal changes that will take place.

Analyse the mechanisms of ecological restoration of the river

1_objectifsPrgm_1

The scientific teams are monitoring the evolution of the river and its banks in order to characterise the effects of restoring ecological continuities on the Selune river by removing obstacles. This multidisciplinary approach aims at understanding the changes taking place at different scales and for different compartments (animal, plant, landscape, human) in this transitioning territory.

Make this pilot site a scientific benchmark

The scientific teams come from a variety of backgrounds, in France and elsewhere. They are helping to improve scientific knowledge of the ecological restoration of rivers following the removal of obstacles. This scientific knowledge is disseminated in France and internationally.

Provide a comprehensive feedback

1_objectifsPrgm_3

The project to restore the Selune by removing two large dams is a first in Europe. The results of the scientific program will be used to provide feedback on the fate of ageing dams, identifying the strengths and the ecological and societal limitations of restoring a river ecosystem.

The actions carried out as part of this programme are mainly funded by the Seine-Normandy Water Agency, the French Office for Biodiversity and the research bodies involved. To find out more, visit the "our partners" page.

The scientific program on the Sélune began in 2012 and will continue until 2027. The scientific program has been developed in several stages, inseparable from the decommissioning work and the political and local decisions relative to the dams.

Since 2018, the scientific program is being managed by an agreement between the State and several partners. Coordinated by INRAE, the programme is also supported by a steering committee and a scientific advisory board.
